The New Beach Sea Angling Club is based at the New Beach Club at Pett Level.  Organised boat angling competitions are held regularly throughout the season from April until October.  Members’ boats are kept on the beach and a winch is available to use for pulling boats down the beach and back up to their berth.

Local catches include plaice, cod, black bream, whiting, dabs, thornback ray, Dover sole, red and tub gurnard, bass, mackerel etc.  Our Annual Christmas beach competition is always a favourite with the members.

The Club held its Annual Dinner and Presentation Night at the New Beach Club on Saturday April 21, we sat down to a lovely meal cooked by our resident cook Natalie. After dinner the presentation of the trophies won during last season took place. Club Competition Champion: Tony Williams who also won the Bridger & Ford Christmas Challenge Cup and the Dab Cup; the Gotts Plaice Cup: Eric Cafritz who also won the Stow Challenge Cup, Best Specimen Boat for the same fish; the Bass Challenge Trophy: Brian Lee who also won the Lynn Beach Cup, Best Specimen Beach for the same fish; the Commodore’s Special Award for the member who, in the Commodore’s opinion has done the most to help the club during the past year: David Goodchild. Due to the poor fishing year there are many cups not presented, which seems to be an ongoing problem in Rye Bay where we fish.

Well the wind blew, again, so we didn’t get out. We had a report from a Hastings angler who managed to get out on the 15th to fish the Boulder Banks, he caught a plaice, then our local seal turned up and that was that, the gulley water is still there which probably accounts for the seal ranging further out to sea than normal. The next competition is on July 1, fingers crossed!

Eric Cafritz, Dave Goodchild and Tony Williams, Club Champion

Rob Smith with a large right hand and a Red Snapper, caught somewhere else!

Andy Goodsell and his first Norwegian cod, just before he kissed it, caressed it and ……….

And then a day or so later he manages to boat Halibut. Which was nice!
