The New Beach Sea Angling Club is based at the New Beach Club at Pett Level. Organised boat angling competitions are held regularly throughout the season from April until October. Members’ boats are kept on the beach and a winch is available to use for pulling boats down the beach and back up to their berth.
Local catches include plaice, cod, black bream, whiting, dabs, thornback ray, Dover sole, red and tub gurnard, bass, mackerel etc. Our Annual Christmas beach competition is always a favourite with the members.
Once again there have been no reports of any boats going to sea but we have at last fished our Christmas beach competition, postponed from December due to windy conditions. Only eight anglers turned up on the day and with calm weather over the past few days fish were hard to come by. Different species of diving birds were in abundance and Cyril the seal showed himself on several occasions.
Winner of the competition was Mark Farley with four fish measuring 89cms. Second was Darren Barry with three fish for 68cms and third Ivan Stapley two fish for 44cms.
Hot soup and sausages in baguettes were enjoyed by all on our return to the club and prizes were presented to the successful anglers. I would like to wish all our members a Very Happy New Year and tight lines.

Our season is at an end with the completion of the annual beach competition. There will be some days during the early part of the year when boats will be able to put to sea, if you need a refresher on the use of the winch and/or equipment we use to get the boats up and down the beach, please don’t use anything until you have had a word with our Commodore or one of our committee members who will arrange a session on anything you are uncertain of.
