The New Beach Sea Angling Club is based at the New Beach Club at Pett Level. Organised boat angling competitions are held regularly throughout the season from April until October. Members’ boats are kept on the beach and a winch is available to use for pulling boats down the beach and back up to their berth.
Local catches include plaice, cod, black bream, whiting, dabs, thornback ray, Dover sole, red and tub gurnard, bass, mackerel etc. Our Annual Christmas beach competition is always a favourite with the members.
FRIDAY MAY 10th
A few photographs from our annual dinner, not so many this year as we had a particularly poor season due to strong winds and a general lack of fish in the Bay. From the top: some of the members and guests, Nick Jury receiving two trophies for a rather nice Thornback Ray of over 11lb; Myra Cafritz and the cup for the best specimen plaice; Sparra Harris was our club champion and got the shield to prove it and Mark Farley won the Christmas Cup Beach Competition. All presented by our Club Chairman, Pete Drew.
Pete thanked everyone for coming along to the dinner, and Natalie for cooking our food which was excellent. He also extended our good wishes to our Club President, Alan Kemp, who is not too well at the moment.
You have the list of competition dates for the forthcoming season, remember every date is now a competition with no alternative, hopefully we will get a few more good days in this year. Any problems talk to our Competition Secretary: Andy Goodsell on 07809 573389 or our Commodore: Mick Goswell on 07759 457926.
If any boat owner needs a refresher on the use of the winch and/or equipment we use to get the boats up and down the beach, please don’t use anything until you have had a word with the Commodore or one of our committee members who will arrange a session on anything you are uncertain of including the new arrangement for getting the boats down the beach.
On Sunday 19th May we managed our second competition of the new season. It was nice to see eight boats putting to sea with 17 anglers fishing from 09.15 to 15.15. The fishing was very slow for most of the day and the weather was nice to start with but halfway through the competition it deteriorated with a strengthening wind. The results were: first Mark Farley, with 6lb 4oz, second Mark Wright with 5lb 15oz and third Pete Drew with a little less at 5lb 7oz. The first specimen of the year was landed by the Commodore, Mick Goswell, a dab of 11oz. Our next competition, weather permitting, will be on 2nd June 08.00 to 14.00, fingers crossed for fine warm weather.
